Philosophy

North Shore Counlseling Services, LLC. is an outpatient treatment center providing individual, couples, and family counseling and treatment. My goal is to help people reach their potential, overcome traumatic experiences, learn new skills, and lead more satisfying lives. I believe that psychotherapy is useful not only in reducing or eliminating symptoms, but that it is also effective in fostering mental and emotional growth and enhancing your life. Dr. Richter works with you to develop an individually tailored treatment plan that best meets your needs. Treatment objectives and interventions will be chosen from a wide range of modalities to fit your goals, strengths, and weaknesses. In addition, I work closely with medical practitioners, psychiatrists, and other mental health practitioners to coordinate treatment of the mind, body, and spirit. I have a personal investment in the achievement of positive outcomes for all my clients. In order for this to happen, I must provide a supportive environment, respectful of individual differences, that enables you to address challenging issues.

Trauma Specialty

The neurobiology of trauma often requires more than traditional supportive, cognitive-behavioral, DBT-informed therapy, or stress-management skills. Dr. Richter has used Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) since 1995 to help clients quickly process traumatic memories and alleviate the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. EMDR is also used for chronic pain-management and performance enhancement at work or school.

Traditional Goal-Oriented Counseling

Dr. Richter treats individuals (age 12 & up), couples, & families. Traditional, insight-oriented psychotherapy is conducted on short and long-term bases. Clients often respond to empathic, nonjudgmental listening to be fully heard & gently guided towards self-actualization. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps the client to develop new, more productive ways of thinking and "showing-up" in daily life to ultimately achieve more enriched, satisfying lives.

QEEG and Neurofeedback

Some conditions such as ADD or epilepsy are best treated by EEG neurofeedback. Neurotherapy helps an individual learn to regulate their brain and optimize performance by increasing certain brain activity and decreasing other activity in specific areas. Your individualized treatment protocol is determined by your QEEG assessment, presenting symptoms, and treatment objectives. Assessment is graphed using z-scores, with a "brain-map" much like a weather map depicting the most salient areas to treat.
